Progression
Star Chart, Mastery Rank, and key quests.
Warframe does not have a traditional linear level-up system. Instead, progression flows through the Star Chart — an interconnected map of the Origin System — and is measured by your Mastery Rank.
The Star Chart
The Star Chart is your mission map, accessible from the Navigation console in your Orbiter. It shows the Origin System divided into planets and locations, each with multiple mission nodes. You unlock new regions by completing Junction objectives at the end of each planet's path.
| Mercury | Tutorial planet — Exterminate, Capture missions | Unlock: Available from start |
| Venus | Corpus territory — introduces Shield enemies | Unlock: Complete Mercury Junction |
| Earth | Grineer Forest — introduces Defense mission type | Unlock: Complete Venus Junction |
| Mars | Mid-game planet, harder Grineer enemies | Unlock: Complete Earth Junction |
| Ceres → Pluto | Progressive difficulty through the system | Each Junction requires specific tasks |
| Sedna | Endgame difficulty, Grineer stronghold | Unlock: Late game junction chain |
| Void / Derelict | Special zones with Relics and unique rewards | Accessible via keys/relics |
Junction Objectives
Junctions are unlocked by completing specific tasks, which might include:
- ◆Complete all missions on the current planet
- ◆Reach a minimum Mastery Rank
- ◆Kill a certain number of enemies with a specific damage type
- ◆Complete a specific mission type (Spy, Defense, etc.) a number of times
- ◆Defeat the Junction guardian — a powerful Specter (AI-controlled Warframe)
Mission Types
Kill all enemies in the mission. Most straightforward mission type.
Protect a cryopod or target for waves of enemies. Great for farming drops.
Stay alive and keep life support above 0% for as long as possible. Resource rich.
Find and capture a VIP target. Fast missions — great for quick progress.
Hack data vaults without triggering alarms. Stealth-focused. Good rewards.
Hold communication towers by standing in them. Multi-objective defense.
Protect excavators mining for Cryotic. Rewards rare Void Relics.
Hunt and kill a boss target. Required for Warframe part farming.
Mastery Rank (MR)
Mastery Rank is your overall account progression. You earn MR XP by leveling Warframes, weapons, companions, and archwings to rank 30 for the first time. Each item grants MR XP once — re-leveling the same weapon does not give MR again.
- ◆MR 2: Unlocks trading with other players. Essential for marketplace access.
- ◆MR 5: Many mid-game weapons become available. Access to more mission types.
- ◆MR 8: Significant milestone. Unlocks most standard weapons and access to harder content.
- ◆MR 10+: Advanced weapons (Riven Mods, Rivens for specific weapons) become useful. Access to Arbitrations.
- ◆MR 30 (max traditional): All items unlocked. You become a True Master. Additional rewards at higher tiers available via Legendary Ranks.
The Essential Quest Order
Warframe's story is told through quests that unlock over time. Do them in order — later quests reference and require earlier ones, and some contain significant story revelations best experienced in sequence:
- 1Vor's Prize— Tutorial — required. Teaches all basic systems.
- 2Natah— Unlocks after completing Uranus Junction. Introduces the Sentients.
- 3The Second Dream— One of the most acclaimed story missions in any game. Redefines the Warframe universe.
- 4The War Within— Continues the Operator story arc. Expands abilities significantly.
- 5Chains of Harrow— Dark, atmospheric horror quest. Strong lore expansion.
- 6The Sacrifice— Emotional conclusion to the Umbra story arc. Rewards Excalibur Umbra.
- 7The New War— Massive expansion-scale quest. The culmination of years of story setup.
- 8Whispers in the Walls— Post-New War expansion, introduces the Zariman and new arcane systems.
